Creating 3D Grunge Text

Creating 3D Grunge Text

In this tutorial we will be creating an amazing 3d gurney text. I discovered this effect on accident, thought it was cool, and figured i would share. This effect is very easy and quick to achieve.
Step 1:
Open up a fresh document 400×400 pixels in size. Fill the background with a diagonal gradient from #947cca to #94c6ca.

Step 2:
Grab a white soft brush and gently brush the corners. Lower the opacity a little bit.

Step 3:
Type out whatever text you’ll be applying it to in big letters centered up. I used Eurostile Bold 44pt.
gtext type site name
Step 4: (repeat 5x)
Duplicate your text layer (ctrl+j), rasterize it, and move it down 1px (use the down arrow key).
gtext duplicate
Step 5:
Merge all the text duplicate layers (ctrl+e), move the original on top, and lower the opacity of the duplicates to 50%.

Step 6:
Make a selection of the original text layer (ctrl+click on the layers pallet).
gtext selection
Step 7:
Expand the selection by 1 pixel. To do this go to select>modify>expand and set it to 1 pixel.
gtext expand
Step 8:
Delete this deletion from the duplicate layer. It should look like this so far.
gtext delete
Step 9:
Rasterize the original text, and merge it with the duplicate. Make a duplicate of the merged layer.
gtext merge
Step 10:
Pixelate the top layer. To do this go to Filter>pixelate>mosaic, set the cell size to 11.
gtext pixelate
Step 11:
Move the non-pixelated layer up a few pixels, to center it in the pixelated area.
gtext delete pixelated
Step 12:
Make a selection of the non pixelated text. Select the inverse (select>select>inverse). Delete this selection from the pixelated text layer. Delete the non-pixelated text layer and your done. Heres how it should look.
